Welcome to Troop 274!
As I look forward to another year of Scouting, I am excited to have you joining us. Troop 274 has a long history in Scouting in the Puyallup area, the Rainier District and the Pacific Harbors Council. One of the major factors contributing to our continued success is the active cooperation and participation of Scouts and parents like you.
We are proudly chartered by Shepherd of the Hill Presbyterian Church and meet in their facility. In fact, Shepherd of the Hill Presbyterian Church has opened its doors to Cub Scout Pack 274 and Crew 274 for the older scouts who want high adventure. When a boy joins Troop 274, I believe that his parents join the troop as well. Experience has taught us that your son's interest and accomplishments will be in direct proportion to your participation with him. You will find that time spent in Scouting is quality time between parent and son. We encourage you to become involved in the troop and in your son’s trail to Eagle. I receive many questions from parents that they were never Scouts, how can they participate? Parents can join the committee and parent group to keep informed as well as joining my Assistant Scoutmaster team. I am currently the only former Boy Scout and Eagle Scout, but there is so much more to teach a young boy as he transitions into a young man.
The Boy Scout model is to be "Boy Led / Adult Guided". Here, the Scouts are in charge and make the decisions about weekly/monthly agendas and choosing our camping destinations or other activities. Adult leaders provide an environment that allows boys to experience what it means to be a "boy scout". Of course, everything does not always go off smoothly. This too, is a great learning lesson for your sons. I like to use the term “Adult Mentored” as this is laser focused on what the role of the adults actually should be.
This handbook’s purpose is to facilitate your transition into Scouting and Troop 274. The following pages will answer many questions you may have. Please review this handbook together and save it as a reference during your son's scouting career. This handbook is not a replacement for the official Boy Scout Handbook Edition 13. Not all national policies are covered here. The information in this handbook is meant to supplement the Boy Scout Handbook and to provide specific information on our troop. Every Scout Family who joins Troop 274 will get a copy of this Troop Handbook and it is my expectation that you read it to ensure we stay on course. If you do not understand something, please reach out to me and ask, as I will be glad to assist in any way I can
Feel free to contact me or one of our Assistant Scoutmasters any time you have questions through Scoutbook.
Once again, Welcome to Troop 274! We are glad you are joining us!
Sincerely,
Rob Glenn, Scoutmaster
